What Can You Learn Through Dog Agility?

Agility involves much more than teaching a dog to complete obstacles.

Training helps dog-and-handler teams develop:

  • Focus around distractions

  • Confidence in new environments

  • Clearer communication

  • Body awareness and coordination

  • Motivation and reward skills

  • Independence

  • Accurate handling

  • Speed and commitment

  • Start-line understanding

  • Jump, tunnel, weave and contact skills

  • The ability to complete sequences and courses

Your training will begin at an appropriate level and progress according to your dog’s understanding, confidence and physical development.

You do not need ambitions to compete. Recreational handlers are welcome to enjoy agility as an engaging activity with their dogs, while competitive teams can receive coaching tailored towards their performance goals.

Beginner Dog Agility in Leeds

Starting correctly matters.

Beginner training should not involve rushing dogs onto full-height equipment or repeatedly running courses they do not understand. Strong agility performance begins with focus, communication, confidence and carefully developed foundation skills.

Early training may include:

  • Learning to work around other dogs

  • Developing valuable food and toy rewards

  • Following the handler’s movement

  • Moving forward independently

  • Building confidence in tunnels

  • Working over poles at a low height

  • Developing body awareness

  • Introducing handling cues

  • Learning to wait and release

  • Creating positive training habits

These foundations make future equipment training clearer and help both dog and handler understand how to work together.

Recreational and Competitive Agility Coaching

Agility can be enjoyed at any level.

Some handlers want an exciting weekly activity that strengthens their partnership with their dog. Others want to enter their first competition, progress through the grades or refine the details required for Championship-level performance.

Coaching can be shaped around goals such as:

  • Building confidence and enjoyment

  • Learning to complete full courses

  • Entering an agility competition

  • Improving handling choices

  • Developing obstacle independence

  • Increasing speed and accuracy

  • Solving recurring competition faults

  • Progressing through the agility grades

  • Preparing for major events

Your goals may change as your experience develops. Training should support the team you are now while helping you build towards the team you want to become.

Positive, Progressive Agility Training

Training at Unleashed Pawtential is positive, practical and adapted to the individual dog.

Exercises are broken into manageable stages so dogs can learn confidently and handlers understand what they are teaching. Rewards are used thoughtfully to develop motivation, clarity and independence.

Rather than repeatedly running exercises without understanding why they succeed or fail, you will learn how your movement, timing, cues and reward placement influence your dog.

The aim is not simply to complete an exercise during a lesson. It is to give you skills that continue improving your training afterwards.

Train with Nikki Hodgson

Agility coaching is led by Nikki Hodgson, an experienced dog trainer and Grade 7 and Championship agility competitor.

Nikki has attended Team GB tryouts and international qualifiers and has experience training dogs and handlers from complete beginner level through to competitive agility.

Her coaching is honest, supportive and focused on meaningful progress. Each exercise is adapted to the needs of the individual team rather than applying the same training method to every dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any dog do agility?

Many dogs can enjoy appropriately adapted agility training. Their age, health, physical structure, confidence and individual motivation should all be considered. Seek suitable professional advice before beginning if you have concerns about your dog’s health or mobility.

Does my dog need previous agility experience?

No. Complete beginners can begin with the six-week Agility Foundations Course or book a one-to-one session.

How old must my dog be?

Dogs can join the Foundations Course from six months old. Young dogs will work on age-appropriate foundation exercises rather than repetitive or full-height jumping.

Does my dog need a good recall?

A reasonably reliable recall and some basic focus will make group training easier. Dogs that struggle significantly around distractions may benefit from beginning with one-to-one coaching.

Can reactive or nervous dogs do agility?

Some nervous or reactive dogs can enjoy agility, but a group environment is not suitable for every dog. Begin with a one-to-one assessment so training can be planned around your dog’s confidence, comfort and safety.

Do we have to compete?

No. Recreational handlers are equally welcome. Training can be shaped around enjoying the activity, developing new skills or preparing for competition.

How much does dog agility training cost?

The six-week Agility Foundations Course costs £120. Established classes cost £60 per four-week block, and individual 45-minute sessions cost £45. The Agility Coaching Membership includes two sessions each month for £80. Workshop prices vary according to the trainer and format.

Which option should I choose?

Choose the Foundations Course if you are completely new to agility. If your dog has previous experience, book a one-to-one assessment so Nikki can evaluate your current skills and recommend the most appropriate training route.
