Who Are Our Agility Classes For?

Our classes are suitable for:

  • Complete beginners with no previous agility experience

  • Dogs and handlers progressing from foundation training

  • Recreational teams looking for an enjoyable activity

  • Competitive handlers developing more advanced skills

  • Teams needing help with particular obstacles or handling challenges

You do not need ambitions to compete. Whether you want to enjoy a new activity with your dog or progress through the competition grades, your training will be adapted to suit your goals.

Dogs must be fully vaccinated and physically well to participate.

Starting as a Complete Beginner

Complete beginners can join our six-week Agility Foundations Course without attending an assessment first.

This course introduces the essential focus, handling and foundation skills needed before progressing to established agility classes. Dogs can begin age-appropriate foundation training from six months old.

Young dogs will work on suitable exercises rather than repetitive or full-height jumping.

Joining an Established Agility Class

Before joining one of our established classes, you and your dog will need to attend a one-to-one assessment.

This allows Nikki to understand your current experience, identify what your dog needs and place you in the most appropriate class. It also ensures that the group environment will be comfortable and productive for everybody attending.

Places in established classes are available when a suitable space becomes free.

What Will You Learn?

Training is adapted to the needs of the dogs and handlers within each class rather than following the same fixed exercises for every team.

Depending on your experience and current goals, sessions may include:

  • Focus and engagement around distractions

  • Agility handling techniques

  • Jump skills and confidence

  • Tunnel skills

  • Weave-pole training

  • Contact-equipment performance

  • Start-line waits

  • Obstacle discrimination

  • Building independence

  • Completing short sequences and courses

  • Developing speed, accuracy and confidence

  • Competition preparation

If your dog is struggling with a particular skill, exercises can be adapted to help you understand the problem and build a clearer training plan.

Small, Progressive Group Coaching

Our agility classes contain up to five dog-and-handler teams.

Small groups provide each team with individual training time and feedback while allowing dogs to develop the ability to focus in the presence of others.

Rather than simply running courses repeatedly, sessions are designed to help you understand how and why an exercise works. You will learn how your movement, timing and positioning affect your dog, giving you skills that can be applied beyond a single training session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my dog need previous agility experience?

No. Complete beginners can start with the six-week Agility Foundations Course. Dogs with previous experience will require a one-to-one assessment before joining an established class.

Does my dog need good recall?

A reasonably reliable recall and some basic obedience will make group training easier. If your dog struggles significantly with focus or recall, begin with one-to-one coaching.

Can reactive or nervous dogs join a class?

Dogs that are nervous, highly excitable or reactive should attend a one-to-one assessment first. This allows us to decide whether a group class is currently the right environment for them.

Is agility only for people who want to compete?

No. Recreational handlers are equally welcome. Your training can be shaped around enjoying the sport, developing new skills or working towards competition.

How old must my dog be?

Dogs can join the Agility Foundations Course from six months old. Training is adapted to their age and physical development, with proper jumping technique introduced from around 12 months.

Can I join an established class immediately?

You can join when an appropriate space becomes available and after completing a one-to-one assessment.
