Soulful Sunday: What Agility Has Taught Me About Myself
Agility started as a sport for me, but it’s become so much more—it’s been a mirror, a teacher, and sometimes even a healer.
Through the ups and downs, I’ve learned I’m mentally stronger than I ever gave myself credit for. I don’t let negative comments stick to me anymore. Instead, I choose to surround myself with people who inspire me, push me, and celebrate the journey with me. And along the way, I’ve met some truly amazing friends who feel like family.
Agility has taught me persistence. Determination. Relentlessness. Every knocked pole, every missed contact, every setback only fuelled me to rise again. I don’t back down easily now—I get back up sharper and more focused.
But maybe the biggest lesson? That results will never compare to the connection and joy I feel when I’m truly in sync with my dog. Winning is great, but it’s the shared glance, the wagging tail, the moment of flow that stays with me.
It’s also widened my perspective. Agility isn’t just about training obstacles—it’s about the whole picture. Reward methods that build confidence. Fitness, not just for my dog but for me too. Prioritising recovery and mental health. Celebrating small wins that stack into something bigger.
This sport has reminded me that growth is holistic. It’s not about perfection, it’s about partnership. And the more I lean into that truth, the more fulfilled I feel—not just as a handler, but as a person.
So today, I’m grateful—for the lessons, the people, the persistence, and most of all, for the joy that comes from running side by side with my dog. Because agility isn’t just shaping my team. It’s shaping me.
