The Importance of Session Structure in Training

A good session isn’t just about what you train.

It’s about how you structure it.

Without structure, training turns into chaos — random reps, unclear goals, and a dog (and handler) who finish unsure of what actually improved.

Every session should have three parts:

🐾 1. Warm-up and connection

Set the tone. Wake up the body and the brain. Quick engagement games, a few tricks, a moment of focus. This tells your dog, “We’re working together now.”

🐾 2. The focus work

Pick one clear goal. Maybe it’s weaves, tight turns, or contact criteria. Keep it short and specific. Don’t chase everything at once.

🐾 3. Cool down and clarity

End on success. Always. Reinforce calm behaviour, praise the effort, and let your dog know training is finished. That’s how you protect confidence and motivation long-term.

Don’t just train harder, train smarter.

A structured session gives your dog predictability, your training purpose, and your results consistency.

If your sessions keep drifting off track or ending in frustration, check the structure before you blame the skill.
