Soulful Sunday: Burnout Recovery & Permission to Rest

Nikki Hodgson dog agility Leeds

We don’t talk about it enough in agility: burnout is real. Competing takes a toll—not just on our dogs, but on us as handlers too. The pressure, the travel, the constant striving for results—it can quietly drain the joy out of the sport we love.

That’s why breaks matter. Right now, I’m in a 3-month pause from competing. And honestly? It feels strange. When your life is built around the next show, the next run, the next goal, stepping back can feel like losing momentum. But the truth is, rest is not falling behind. Rest is an essential part of peak performance.

Winter especially has a way of pressing on our mental health. The cold, the dark, the endless grind—it can wear us down. Giving yourself permission to step off the hamster wheel and just be with your dog is one of the most powerful gifts you can give your team.

Burnout recovery isn’t about doing nothing—it’s about doing the right things:
🐾 Long walks without a stopwatch.
🐾 Play sessions that aren’t about skills, just joy.
🐾 Time for your own fitness, hobbies, and mental reset.
🐾 Space to remember why you love the sport in the first place.

Here’s the thing: when you rest, you’re not losing your edge—you’re sharpening it. You’re filling your cup so you can come back to the start line with energy, clarity, and passion.

So if you’ve been feeling drained, take this as your sign: you have permission to rest. Your worth isn’t measured by how many weekends you compete. It’s measured by the love you put into your dog, your growth, and yourself.

And when you step back into the ring? You’ll be ready—not just to run, but to shine.
