How to Show Up for Agility, Even on a Hard Day
Not every day feels like a good day for agility. Sometimes you’re exhausted, stressed, overwhelmed, or just not in the mood to train. Maybe the weather’s awful, your motivation’s gone, or life has just knocked you sideways. But the truth is — the handlers who grow, win, and build unbeatable partnerships are the ones who show up anyway.
So how do you show up for agility, even when it’s hard?
1. Lower the Bar, But Still Show Up
Hard days aren’t about smashing PBs. They’re about presence. Set the bar low: maybe you do a few tunnel sends or a quick start-line game. Maybe you just walk an imaginary course. Small sessions still count. Even five minutes builds the habit.
2. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
When energy is low, go back to basics. Prioritise playing, bonding, and having fun with your dog. Skip the tricky drills. Just be together. Building connection on a hard day can be more valuable than chasing clean runs.
3. Have a "Tired Day" Training Plan
Decision fatigue is real. Prep a go-to agility session for your hard days — something light, fun, and low-pressure. That way, you don’t have to think, you just show up and do it.
4. Talk to Yourself Like a Coach
Your dog doesn’t need you to be perfect — they need you to show up. Be kind, but firm:
“You’re tired, but you can play today.”
“You’ve got this. Let’s just do one thing.”
5. Remember Why You Train
You’re not training to have perfect days. You’re training for trust, teamwork, and progress. Hard days are part of that story. Keep your ‘why’ front and centre. You’re building something that matters.
6. Trust the Process
Progress isn’t built on the perfect days — it’s built on the days you show up anyway. Those tiny, scrappy sessions still move you forward.
Great partnerships are made in the moments you almost didn’t show up. Choose to keep turning up. That’s where the magic happens.
